It all started with a missed flight. And the conviction that the payment process at the fuel station could be improved.

2014: ryd is founded in Munich
On his 50th birthday, Oliver Götz — today Executive Chairman of ryd — founded the company. At the time ryd was still called Tanktaler. In addition to digital payment, the focus back then also included telematics offerings.
2015: The first payment with ryd
The first ryd fueling station goes live in Augsburg. It marks the very first of many steps toward building a nationwide network. Our first partner, PRÄG, was soon to be followed by many more.
2018: Tanktaler becomes ryd
ryd sets the stage for international expansion. The brand relaunch as ryd – pronounced like the English word "ride" – opens the doors to the European market.
2019: ryd and AXA found joint venture in Switzerland
ryd suisse offers an innovative telematics service for car insurance. In 2022, AXA also acquires a stake in the parent company ryd GmbH.
2020: Mastercard & Mercedes-Benz as strategic partners
In addition to capital, ryd is securing key strategic partners for in-car mobile payments—a major milestone for successfully scaling ryd.
2021: ryd expands across Europe
This year is all about international expansion. In-car digital payment is now also available in Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Portugal, Switzerland, and Austria.
2021: In-Car Payment world premiere
A major milestone: For the first time, drivers can use Mercedes-Benz’s "Fuel & Pay" to pay digitally via the vehicle's infotainment system. Today, in-car payment is also available in BMW, Audi, and Skoda models.
2022: bp/Aral join the ryd network
bp joins as a strategic investor alongside Mastercard, Mercedes-Benz, and AXA. In 2022, over 1,100 new Aral fueling stations go live, pushing the ryd network in Germany to a new record high.
2023: ryd partners with MILES
By expanding into the car-sharing market, ryd is opening up a new business segment. In addition to MILES, providers like Bolt, Sixt, and Poppy now use the ryd infrastructure to offer their users a digital fleet card directly within the app.
2024: ryd enters the fleet market
ryd expands its product offering once again: In addition to private drivers, fleet customers can now also benefit from ryd.
2024: ryd expanded with charging and car wash
ryd covers every aspect of mobility: fueling, charging, and washing.
2026: 100% coverage* with ryd fleet
ryd becomes the payment operating system for fleets. Effective immediately, ryd fleet customers can use ryd fleet to pay at any fueling station, charging point, and car wash.
